Rob is the main antagonist and a supporting character in The Amazing World of Gumball. He was formerly a minor background student at Elmore Junior High and was first seen in a poster of the show posted online. Once the world became aware of his uselessness, he was sent to the Void, escaping by holding onto the back of Janice and getting his appearance distorted as a result. Following "The Nobody," he becomes the main antagonist of the show, and Gumball's arch-nemesis.

Appearance[]

Rob was formerly a tall cyclops with a very slim blue body and a single large eye located in the center of his face with a magenta iris. He has extremely long, skinny limbs, pink hands with visible nails, and an over-sized head. He wears a pair of red short shorts with two light orange stripes on the left side, an orange-sleeved yellow crop-top T-shirt, dark orange shoes with blue laces and a brown backpack. He had medium-length auburn hair, which covered a bit of the right side of his eye.

In season 2, he gets a minor redesign. He becomes a 2D character with less detail and his shoes now have yellow buckles rather than blue laces.

After his escape from the Void, Rob's appearance becomes disfigured and broken due to the Void attempting to pull him back in as he clung on to Janice and becomes 3D animated once again. His head is now dodecahedronal and floats slightly above his body, his clothes are now much more polygonal, and parts of his head, his arms and legs periodically display distorted static and glitch in and out, although his midriff inconsistently switches between being pink and static. The right half of his head is now cut off, and the hair that remains has also become polygonal in shape and solid brown in color. Rob's static can be affected by his emotions, as shown when it changes to a darker color as he expresses frustration or malevolence.

His single eye is now pale yellow and his magenta iris is gone, becoming a black pupil, his tongue is now a yellow color, and his eyebrow changed from black to brown and usually, when Rob raises it, the right side clips through his head. Initially, his pupil was a lemniscate shape, though from season 5 onwards, it was changed to a more ovular design.

The skin tone of his head has changed from blue to grey, his left leg and his wrists have pink patches, and his left shoe has been reduced to chartreuse wireframe. His right shoe and hand have changed color to solid dark grey, but his left hand stays the same as before.

He wears the same yellow shirt and red shorts, though the shirt now has a rhombus-shaped hole and its sleeves are missing. The stripes of his shorts are on the right side rather than the left. His backpack is now a solid brown hexagon shape and has no straps, floating behind him, although its presence is inconsistent.

After being painted back into existence after a fight in "The Future," he was given a pig tail.

Superintendent Evil[]

In "The Inquisition," Rob disguises himself as Superintendent Evil, an elderly human male portrayed by Garrick Hagon, wearing a white shirt with a gray suit and tie, along with gray pants and black shoes.

Personality[]

Rob was formerly a nice, sociable person who would enthusiastically greet any passersby on the street whom he knew. He is also seen conversing and partying with the other students. Though in "The Pony," Gumball and Darwin awkwardly call him the wrong name, make him a hollow promise, and kick him down a manhole, he showed that he can easily forgive by temporarily catching their DVD from the sewers.

After his escape from the Void, he temporarily develops amnesia and becomes somewhat depressed. He lives in the basement of the Wattersons' house until Gumball and Darwin become suspicious of his stolen goods. They eventually track him down, and after cornering him, they force him to explain his actions. When they mention that there really isn't a villain in Elmore, the boys suggest he become their arch-nemesis - a suggestion that triggers his memory. He recounts how he begged the boys for help as they passed him in the Void, and how they ignored him and went for Molly (though they failed to notice him). His villainous backstory set, he swears vengeance on the boys for abandoning him and agrees to become their arch-nemesis.

As a villain, Rob has a very nihilistic philosophy on life. He becomes vengeful and bitter. No longer does he care about the well beings of others, and only cares about getting revenge on his self-sworn nemesis: Gumball. This is evident in "The Bus" when he kidnaps both the students and the adults aboard the bus with plans to blow them up simply because he hates Gumball. Such a philosophy is explored even further in "The Disaster" and "The Rerun," in which he becomes aware of his fictional status and wants to make Gumball's life as miserable and broken as possible for the way he's treated on the show. However, much of this also seems to be motivated by identity crisis, existentialism, and a desire for purpose in the world. This is demonstrated when he says that he "never wanted to be the villain" in "The Disaster," and also that after displacing Gumball he can "be whoever he wants."

Despite this, "The Rerun" does show he has a heart as after Gumball attempts to save him, he sacrifices his friendship with Gumball to return to his villainous lifestyle and undo all of the damage. This attitude changes, however, in "The Ex," when Gumball foils all of his plans to destroy Banana Joe, and at the end of the episode, re-establishes his hatred for Gumball. However, in "The Inquisition," he tried to save everyone he could from a mysterious threat by turning them into humans showing that he does value the lives of others though unfortunately he failed due to everyone either not listening or believing him.

Quotes[]

Did you just call me Rich like it was a question?

—Rob, when Gumball called him Rich in "The Pony"

They kicked me down a manhole!

—Rob, when the citizens of Elmore were breaking into the Wattersons' house in "The Finale"

I clung to life, and I came back. But at a cost. You left me disfigured, a nobody, but now you've given me a part to play in the world.

—Rob, during his flashback in "The Nobody"

I'm trying, man, I'm trying to be your enemy!

—Rob, when he was trying to destroy Gumball in "The Nemesis"

I will destroy you and everyone you love!

—Rob, in "The Nemesis"

Darn auto-correct... stupid thing never works.

—Rob, messaging in "The Bus"

All I've got on my resumé is laughing maniacally, monologuing about evil plans, and a major in Canadian history, I can't exactly go into catering!

—Rob, wrestling Gumball on the wing of a plane in "The Bus"

You turned me into the villain, Gumball Watterson, you left me with this broken body, you gave me this ridiculous voice! But now, I am in control. And the time has come for you to pay.

—Rob, in "The Disaster"

That's not even a man's name!

—Rob, after Gumball called him Rose in "The Disaster"

No, no, no, my name isn't—My name is Rob, gosh darn it!

—Rob, when Gumball gets his name wrong in "The Disaster"

Why? This is where my story ends! I belong here with the rest of the universe's mistakes, like socks and sandals, the helicopter ejector seat, and ...whatever that thing is.

—Rob, when he was trapped in the Void in "The Rerun"

"Yeah, I should have let you know. The thing is, I'm neme-seeing someone else now."

—Rob, in "The Ex"

What is wrong with you?! You just ruined the whole thing for me again! I don't believe it! You've got to be the most insufferable, annoying, selfish person I've ever met! In fact, I think I really, really, really ha-a-ate yo-o-u!

—Rob, becoming Gumball's nemesis again in "The Ex"

Oh no... it's started.

—Rob, horrified that the threat he tried to protect everyone from has begun and is now destroying Elmore shortly before falling into the Void in "The Inquisition," also his last words and the last line of the show.

Trivia[]

  • Rob's name was first revealed after people were asking James Lamont who the blue cyclops from "The Party" was. At first he jokingly responded with "We do not speak of him," but after more asking, he gave in and revealed his name.
  • He has the second most major roles (with a total of nine) for a character that is not a Watterson, next to Penny.
  • Rob made a cameo on the computer in "The Genius," and it shows that his friends are (in order) Teri, Alan, Leslie, and Carmen. It also shows him wearing a mustang mask in the desert on Fessebook. This same page reappears in "The Internet."
  • Technically, Rob, Bobert, and Banana Bob have the same name, since they are all shortened forms of the name Robert.
  • An early design of Rob shows him using an arm and hand as a third leg.
  • Originally for season 1, Rob was animated with CGI. In season 2, he was changed to a 2D animated character. In "The Nobody," he is back to being animated in CGI. This makes him, the Evil Turtle's babies, Ocho, and Blitzer the only characters to be animated in both 2D and CGI.
  • "The Nobody" reveals that the static-covered portions of his body glow in the dark.
  • In "The Nobody," it is revealed that Rob never had a mother or any siblings, although at the time he stated this he was suffering from amnesia.
  • He is the second character to undergo a permanent style change in the show, the first being Penny.
  • As of "The Disaster," he is aware of the fact that the world he lives in is fictional.
  • He is the only character who remembers the events that happened during "The Rerun," which sets the events of the episode "The Ex".
  • He claims to have a major in Canadian History, despite never being confirmed to have graduated from Junior High.
  • A running gag exists where Gumball forgets his name, calling him similar one-syllable names that begin with "r." However, in "The Bus," "The Rerun," "The Ex," "The Future," and "The Inquisition," Gumball correctly says his name.
  • Rob was arrested in "The Bus."
  • Rob spoke in a British accent when he was voiced by David Warner[1]. His British accent was made in "The Nemesis" when Gumball changed Rob's voice. He kept the accent in "The Uploads," "The Bus," "The Love," and "The Disaster;" after that, he reset his voice with the universal remote.
  • Although unconfirmed, it is very likely that Rob started to live in the junkyard he brought Banana Barbara to in "The Future" after being caught in the Wattersons' basement.
  • In "The Future," Rob claims he has bad depth perception due to only having one eye.
  • He is the very last character to appear and speak in the main series, as he had the last line in "The Inquisition."
  • Rob stars in the Villainous episode "The Lost Cases of Elmore."
  • Rob is Jacob Hopkins' favorite character from the series.[2]
